Even if there's not a Little Leaguer in your family, you've still got a chance to knit at the ballpark this summer. Last year Zoe proposed the idea of a Stitch 'N Pitch night to the management of the Green Bay Bullfrogs and they agreed. We had a rain-out the scheduled night so we didn't have the hoopla we were hoping for but we did get hats, hot dogs, and sodas in addition to having seats along the third base line with backs and arms and everything. (Photos above) It was so much fun--they're doing it again!

The Bullfrogs will play the Madison Mallards Thursday, June 16th at 7:05 PM at Joannes Stadium next to East High School in Green Bay.

Happy 1st Anniversary!

The May BLKG meeting to celebrate the one year anniversary of our guild was a cook-out that became a cook-in. Victoria's wonderful husband stood outside, in a downpour, under a pine tree, grilling burgers while we ate snacks and salads inside, talked about knitting, and knit.

Lucy and Terri shared exciting plans for a Yarn Crawl in October and what we hope will become an annual Knit-Away Weekend in November. I'll be devoting a post to each of them as soon as I have more info, because I know you're going to want to sign up.

April Meeting, Part 2

Last month's BLKG was well-attended by both members and guests. Vicki Jicha's Barbara Walker was colorful and interesting.

After the program Terri snapped a picture of that night's "show and tell"ers. Some lucky grandbaby will love snuggling those blankets, don't you think?

We had lots of time for comparing tales of knitting accomplishments and frustrations...

and paying dues so we don't miss a thing in the coming year.

Keeping Babies' Heads Warm Since 2010

All year Bay Lakes Knitting Guild members have been knitting preemie hats to donate to local hospitals. There's always a need, unfortunately, so if you've got a small amount of yarn in the bottom of your stash, knit up a hat for some tiny life that needs a little warmth.

I like knitting with worsted weight yarn so I searched the web for preemie hats using it. Here are links to a couple for you to check out:

I confess I'm addicted to brightly variegated yarn for babies. Both of my babies were dark haired and looked great in bold colors, must be why. I'm going to make the next one with pastels. Really. Cross my heart.

F.Y.I.-- I read that preemie hats need to be made of yarn that can be sterilized. Bear that in mind so your gift can be used where it's needed.

Crazy Places to Knit

I'll go first. The craziest place I've ever knit (so far) is 30 ft. underwater at Windsock dive site in Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles.


I used Bryspun nylon US 5 double points and a scrap of dishcloth cotton. I only knit a few stitches because I was too distracted by all the pretty fishies.

You Can Knit History

At the April 14th meeting Vicki, our newsletter maven, spoke about a project close to her heart. Barbara Walker, feminist, knitter, and author, spent years in the 1960s and 70s researching and publishing nearly two thousand stitch patterns in four volumes. Designers and knitters of all skill levels have used her books to spark ideas and projects. The only problem is that all the pictures are in black and white.

A few years ago group of college age knitters decided to rectify the problem by selecting a stitch, knitting a swatch, photographing it, and posting it on the internet. Vicki joined in. Soon the originators of the project got busy with trifles like grad school and law school so two Vickis, one in Green Bay and one in Florida, took over.

You can join the fun by clicking on The Walker Treasury Project link. First thing is to join the project (there are clear, easy to follow directions on the website), pick a stitch that hasn't been duplicated, and get knitting. Be a piece of history.

It's Time To Re-Up!

Believe it or not, it's been a whole year since the Bay Lakes Knitting Guild of Green Bay was born. That means that it's time for you to renew your membership--or join for the first time. We're fun, and we'll help you become a better knitter, or at least a braver one. We meet on the second Thursday of the month from September through May in the Ziemer Building of First United Methodist Church. The business meeting begins at 7 PM, although knitters are welcome to come earlier to knit, listen to the goings on of the Board meeting, or browse the library cart (more on that in a later post).

After the meeting is a program guaranteed to capture your interest. Some of this last year's programs were: 3 cast-ons, 3 bind-offs, and a physical therapist who taught some stretches to prevent repetitive motion injury. Now, aren't you sorry you weren't there?

Here's what's under consideration for the next year's programs: increase & decrease stitches, how & why to block your knitting, sewing up (a personal bugaboo), and beaded knitting techniques.
